Higher education programmes and courses on African issues in Norway

CMI

CMI is mainly a research and not an educational institution, but hosts 10 master's students. Most of these come from the University of Bergen (UiB) or the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration (NHH), but students from other institutions are welcome as well. See the link above for more information.

NTNU

African issues may be chosen as the focus of study within most disciplinary research and education programmes at NTNU. Departments with a particularly strong tradition for African studies are those of History and Classical Studies, Geography, and Social Anthropology. NTNU is the only Norwegian university offering extensive courses in Swahili and the opportunity to specialise in African Music. Specialised, interdisciplinary programmes also offer opportunities to specialise in topics of great relevance to Africa's development, see:

Bachelor programme for Social Sciences in African Studies
MPhil programme in Development Studies - specialising in Geography
MPhil programme in Development Studies - specialising in Urban Challenges in East Africa
Master of Science in Globalization
MPhil in Childhood Studies
PhD programme in Interdisciplinary Child Research
Master's degree in Interdisciplinary Studies of Culture

NTNU's Office of International Relations may provide more information to foreign students seeking admittance at NTNU and/or on how studies at NTNU may be combined with courses and programmes from African and/or other foreign universities.

NUPI

The Norwegian Institute of International Affairs does not offer any education programmes, but it does have a system of internships linked to NUPI's prioritised research areas. Internships are mainly for master students and are usually granted for a period of 11 months. For more information, see the NUPI website.

PRIO

PRIO is first and foremost a research institute, but is also involved in several education programmes around the world, and maintains a small scholarship scheme for graduate students. More information on PRIO education-related activities can be found on their website.

UMB

The Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB) has many courses relevant for work in Africa, and most departments have an international orientation with researchers and projects linked to Africa. The Department of International Environment and Development Studies, Noragric, has played an important role in developing institutional collaboration with universities in Africa and other parts of the world, and has several interdisciplinary education programmes where African issues are in focus:

Bachelor programme in Development Studies
Master of Science in International Development Studies
Master of Science in International Environmental Studies
Master of Science in International Relations
PhD programme Development Studies

University of Bergen

Bergen is a major centre for Africa research in Norway, and the University of Bergen (UiB) has a broad selection of discipline-specific courses where African issues figure prominently - see the website and the listing of study programmes for each department for more information. In addition, UiB has a number of interdisciplinary research centres with an international orientation and their own teaching and training offers, centred on different development challenges:

Centre for Development Studies (CDS)
Centre for International Health (CIH)
Centre for International Poverty Research (CIP)
Comparative Research Programme on Poverty (CROP)
Research Centre for Health Promotion and Development (HEMIL)
Uni Global

The Bergen Summer Research School on global challenges is a joint venture between UiB and other institutions in the Bergen area, which normally addresses issues of great relevance to African development and has teachers as well as students from many parts of Africa.

Bergen Resource Centre for International Development, another joint venture opened in October 2009, is an important meeting place for researchers, business people, students and others interested in and working with international development and development research, human rights and international law, as well as other global challenges.
